Four deer, which represented four winds, ran across the branches of the tree and ate the buds. The eagle sat at the top of the branches and the squirrel ran up and down the trunk, passing insults from Nidhogg to the eagle. Nidhogg the serpent and his brood gnawed on the roots of the World Tree. On the day of Ragnarok, the day of doom, the fire giant Surt would set the tree on fire, and heaven and earth would be destroyed.
